at the protest, one for assaulting a police officer and three for crossing a police line. Two protesters were handcuffed after stepping on to a sidewalk that police were trying to keep off-limits.
The demonstration was for the most part peaceful, with protesters milling about the lawns in front of the Capitol or pressing toward the police line while delivering chants like "This is what democracy looks like."
Daniel Barach, a 49-year-old barbour coats financial consultant, said he came to Washington to combat a perception that the "Occupy" movement is only the unemployed or uneducated. Mr. Barach who he was a former hedge fund manager himself, wore a placard urging, "Stop tax breaks for hedge fund managers."
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa (R., Calif.), said its hearing next Tuesday would focus on who made the decision to allow indefinite camping in McPherson Square. The National Park Service has already taken responsibility for the decision, saying it was respecting First Amendment rights even as the protesters appeared to be flouting a regulation against camping.
Mr. Issa has suggested the barbour sale administration doesn't want to confront the protesters for political reasons. The White House has said it received "appropriate updates" on the protests, but decisions were made by the Department of Interior, which includes the park service.
The service came under pressure after city officials voiced concern last week over conditions in McPherson Square, and asked for it to be cleared. In a written response Tuesday, the service said it would meet with D.C. officials this week and "conduct an immediate assessment of health and safety conditions" in the area
