Brad Pitt will star in World War Z

The sub-genre of horror films and novels of Zombie Lit has been exploding following the last few years. After some very successful zombie films such as 28 Days Later and also the remake of Dawn of the Dead, some authors were quick to capitalize on the popularity of the zombie genre. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and World War Z were some of one of the most popular. Brad Pitt was just lately confirmed to star in World War Z.

The coming zombie apocalypse

The precursor to World War Z was a novel called The Zombie Survival Guide, released in 2003. It is a fictional technical manual on how to deal with the undead. In 2006, World War Z was released as a collection of interviews with zombie apocalypse survivors. Max Brooks is the author of both novels, the son of Mel Brooks and previous SNL writer. The book was optioned for a film in 2007, and it has been in development for awhile.

At this year's Comic Con in San Diego, Brad Pitt was announced to star within the film, as outlined by MTV. Paramount has also optioned other works by Max Brooks to be filmed. Marc Forster, director of Quantum of Solace, was attached to direct at one point, but that is likely to change. The zombie genre could be on the way out, as fewer zombie features appear to be getting made.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is also within the works, as well as the film version of World War Z. The mish-mash of Jane Austen's classic novel and zombies, ninjas and carnage will come out sometime in the next year, and will star Natalie Portman. It appears zombies have taken a backseat to whining vampires and werewolves with awful dialogue, but this just might be epic.
